"In the Deep" is a 2003 song written by Michael Becker and Kathleen York, performed by York under her stage name Bird York. The song gained fame from its use in the critically acclaimed film ''Crash''; it also appeared on York's album ''The Velvet Hour''. In 2006, the song was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. York performed the song at the 78th Academy Awards ceremony on March 5, 2006. There was some question as to the song's eligibility, as it had appeared in the film ''The Civilization of Maxwell Bright'' as well as ''The Velvet Hour'', both of which were released before ''Crash''.
